Original title: Meridian
Participated in: MIDPOINT Shorts 2024-2025
Country: Greece

Marina, a coal miner, and her pregnant sister Elina live in the rural soon-to-be abandoned town of Meridian, where lignite is worshipped as a deity. When a group of pilgrims arrive in Meridian to experience the supposed death of God, a strange series of events start to unfold.

In the Greek rural village of Meridian, where lignite is worshipped as a God, Marina, despite having had surgery for cancer, keeps working at the lignite mine. Her sister, Elina is pregnant, and the imminent abandonment of Meridian due to the pollution creates a rift between them. Elina, who wants to leave Meridian, finds hope in prayer, while Marina finds it hard to abandon her way of life despite the problems. Ahmed, Marina's co-worker informs her that the mine is about to cease working, and soon enough her contract is terminated. One day she encounters a group of foreigners, the pilgrims, who ask her to guide them to a mysterious location, offering her payment. Marina accepts and leads them there, where they tell her they want to witness the Death of God. At home, Elina learns about Marina’s cancer and has a fit of rage. Marina abandons the pilgrims and heads back to check on her. On her way suddenly a strange light flashes from the direction of the pilgrims and when Marina goes back to check she finds them laying around a large pile of burnt coal, thick black liquid pouring out of their cavities. In the morning the village holds a funeral for lignite and the sisters witness the end of the lignite era.
