Feature Launch graduate 'History of Love' in Karlovy Vary IFF competition
The project, which participated at Feature Launch 2015 in a three-member team - writer/director Sonja Prosenc, writer Mitja Licen and producer Rok Secen, tells a story of a seventeen-year-old Iva, who is in the process of coming to terms with the death of her mother. Influenced by this deep personal loss and by the discovery that she didn’t know everything about her mom, the girl slowly immerses herself into a strange, almost dreamlike world.
"In the contrast with what one might think this kind of film needs, a very precise screenplay is necessary to determine the exact line between how much of a story to present, without creating an impression that the point of the film is to tell a story, and on the other hand to give just the right story clues to create a universe of the film, within which we can explore inner states of characters and also more abstract concepts of emotional detachment as one of the main leitmotivs. This was one of the first and very important things we defined at MIDPOINT, where I had an opportunity to work on the screenplay with Pavel Jech, Gyula Gazdag, the Artistic Director of the Sundance Filmmakers Lab, and Csaba Bollock. It was an enriching experience," explains writer/director Sonja Prosenc.
The film, built up as a co-production between Slovenia, Norway and Italy, was picked up at Feature Launch for the When East Meets West co-production forum, receiving the EAVE Scholarship Award, as well as the TRL Espresso Award. "MIDPOINT was a first step in the development of this film, not only for the development of the script, but also on a production level. It offered us a platform to present the film to decision makers that were important in the further development of the project," says producer Rok Secen.
The twelwe films in the main competition will compete for the statutory festival awards: the Grand Prix, the Special Jury Prize, the Best Director Award, the Best Actress Award and the Best Actor Award.
MIDPOINT will be launching the presetation platform of its brand-new Feature Launch 2018 structure within the industry platform of Karlovy Vary, as well. The nine projects, which were trained during its Workshop 1 (within WEMW in January 2018) and Workshop 2 (Serbia in April - May 2018), will be showcased within the Works in Development pitching session, held on Monday, July 2, 2018.
The call for applications for the Feature Launch 2019 is already open and closes September 21, 2018.
