You have your pilot script and a series bible. You feel you're ready to enter the market. And when you pitch your series idea, an executive casually asks, “Have you got a mood video?” International pitch forums nowadays outright require a teaser trailer in their application material.
So, what do you do when you may not even have a director on board, certainly not the cast you envision for your show way down the line? You may have some meagre development funding, or no money at all, so you need to rely on favors and goodwill.
You can certainly engage a good editor and use some flashy editing on bits and pieces from existing shows. Boring, you say? I agree.
